Based in Christchurch, Hamish Kerr has quite literally raised the bar for New Zealand athletics. As a high jumper, Hamish made history by becoming the first New Zealander to win a gold medal in the men’s high jump, in one of the most intense jump-offs at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Alongside his close friend and High Performance coach James Sandilands they are pushing the boundaries of what professional life looks like for a track and field athlete and coach.

‘Made For …..’ is our new series showcasing people from the Barkers community who inspire us in their chosen fields. These are people who are striving each day – honing their craft, pushing boundaries and searching for progress to create a better world, whatever that may be to them.

At Barkers, we design for the everyday, for the moments in between and the milestones. And while not all of us are clearing two metres in front of the world, we’re all showing up in our own ways. Hamish Kerr’s story is a reminder that greatness doesn’t always look like what you expect. Sometimes, it’s the quiet work done with intention, the persistence and the passion that really elevates us.

So here’s to Hamish & James, two mates taking on the world. Made For Life.
