Meet Ryan, BMC Head Tailor based in our Good Company – Ponsonby store. If you’re in the neighbourhood, he’s your go-to expert for custom tailoring; offering a next level customer experience and an attention to detail that’ll ensure you’ll walk out well-suited with a garment built to reflect your personal style and requirements. So… let’s get acquainted.

What sparked your interest in men’s tailoring?

I was working at a department store in the suiting area and found some fabric books and forms that hadn’t been used for years. I asked a colleague about them, fell in love with the idea of custom tailoring and so decided to give it a go myself.

How would you define your personal style?

Diverse, adaptive and ever-changing. I hate to be predictable. Some days I turn up casual and others super slick. I try not to wear the same outfits often. Love me a short suit and playing with High-Low fashion trends. Suits and Docs. Dressing a suit or blazer down with a T-shirt. But when I have suit clients of course I will dress for it!

What are three essential items in your wardrobe?

Plain black and white tees - perfect to layer under a collared shirt or a suit. Hidden Socks – love me some ankle. Ideal for a ‘cropped pants with dress shoes’ or ‘shorts and sneakers’ look. Pocket Squares – I will never wear a blazer or suit without one. The ultimate splash of colour to finish off the outfit.

Is there a current Made to Measure trend you’d recommend?

For Jackets – contrasting buttonholes, stitch colours and small details. Match your buttons, linings and pipings. It is all about creating a theme. For Trousers - side adjusters and big waistbands. People don’t typically steer away from standard trouser styling. Let’s start now!

Best thing about working in the world of tailoring?

Creating and developing a vision into reality. When someone comes to me with an out the box idea or something different and specific I love working with them to make it happen. The first fitting of the finished product, the big reveal is always good fun and exciting.

Bonus Question. When you’re not working where can we find you? ?

The skatepark! Or just out on my BMX getting some fresh air.
