Who are they?

Our tailored shirt range is made by a super high-quality shirt factory located in the Shandong province of China. They are in fact, one of the best in the business. We’ve been working closely with this supplier for over five years now, and our partnership is so strong, we have an exclusive supply arrangement with them.

What do they make?

As our primary shirting manufacturer, they create some of our best known shirts, like our Tribeca slim fit in polished cotton, our Thatcher Oxford, the world famous (in New Zealand) AB’s shirt - worn by the world champion All Blacks, and many more.

Why them?

We consider them to be a gold standard and they tick all the right boxes for us. A world-class leader in their field, they operate a fully vertical production model encompassing BCI cotton breeding, cotton planting, spinning, dyeing, weaving, finishing and shirt sewing - they control every step of the process, and we think that’s pretty special!

Because they own and manage their own supply chain, they can ensure both a high quality of fabric and manufacturing, as well as high standards in both their ethical and environmental practices, with numerous accreditations and management systems in place. This means that their shirts aren’t just better shirts, they’re better for the environment and the people who make them too.

What are their environmental and ethical standards?

We’re proud to share that this supplier advocates the use of natural and renewable textile materials, the use of safe and healthy auxiliaries and dyestuffs, and the development of green, low-carbon textiles and garments to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly supply chain.

A key part of their vertically integrated supply chain is that they own their own cotton farms, where they grow BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton and organic cotton. They have also developed eco-finish alternatives that’s formaldehyde free, ‘eco non-iron’.

Luthai have also won the second prize of the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award for their research of “high flow membrane treatment and recycle technology of dyeing wastewater and its industrialization”, and have achieved many major breakthroughs of energy saving, emission reduction, green and low carbon technologies in the textile industry.

All their factory workers are paid above the living and minimum wage and receive overtime pay. They also received holiday pay, welfare payments and annual bonuses, and have access to collective bargaining. Like all the factories we work with, they are child labour free.

Like all our suppliers, these guys conduct extensive audits, alongside environmental and social compliance programmes that extend from the wellbeing of their employees (they are certified under the WRAP and SA8000 Socially Responsible Apparel Production systems) to extensive environmental management systems including OEKO-TEX, BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) and GOTS (Organic Cotton System Certification). Additionally they are certified under the ISO Management Systems for 9001 Management Systems, 14001 Environmental Management Systems, and 18001 Health & Safety Management Systems.
